We investigate the performance of metallic diffraction grating(MDG) based surface plasmon resonance fiber optic sensor for bio-sensing applications. In this sensor diffraction order negative one is used to excite plasmon waves. Sensing performance is evaluated using numerical simulations based on rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) method. The reflectance amplitude, width of the SPR curve and shift in the resonant wavelength with refractive index change are considered for estimating the bio-sensing performance. Our results show that aluminum grating based SPR sensor proves to be best for sensing applications and maximum sensitivity in angular interrogation is found to be 248°/RIU which is best for excellent sensor.
