The advent of smart sensors has not only offered the ease of use and installation in a measurement system but has also enhanced overall measurement system reliability. This paper presents a hardware platform to transform a conventional pressure sensor into a smart pressure sensor, adhering to the standard defined by IEEE 1451 standards. Attributes of smart sensors, such as self- identification, self fault-diagnosis, self-calibration and self-data processing has been implemented by interfacing an Atmega 328 microcontroller (Arduino UNO board) along with the additional circuitry to raw pressure sensor (metallic strain gauge based). Smart pressure sensor proto has been configured in a wireless networking mode by using a ZigBee based transceiver module. The complete unit after configuration gets transformed into a smart pressure sensor node. In order to use the smart pressure sensor proto for real time application a circular buffer is embedded in the algorithm to store the data for certain duration. This feature facilitates to deploy them for real time remote sensing application.
