Fine Flow Field and Unsteady Hydrodynamic Performance Calculation for Rudder Cavitation

In order to study the precise flow field of rudder cavitation and related laws of unsteady hydrodynamic force affected by rudder cavitation,structure grid is used to model the propeller and rudder model of a ship and the rudder cavitation is calculated based on turbulence equation and VOF method.Based on the actual ship’s observation test of cavitation for rudder, the calculated results of the rudder cavitation are compared with the actual ship’s observation test of cavitation for rudder, which proves the reliability of the numerical method.Firstly,the periodical changes of rudder’s cavitation are discussed and analyzed.Then the rudder cavitation is simulated based on the the two states between cavitation and non-cavitation under three kinds of rudder angle, and the law of the unsteady hydrodynamic performance on the rudder’s lateral force, rudder shaft torque and rudder’s resistance is summarized.Besides, the principle is interpreted. The results of this study can provide a good reference for the optimized design of the rudder.
