Design of a PWM-Type Bipolar Impulse Generator with High DV/dt Output

This paper presents a design of impulse generator which can generate ±3 V output voltage and ±800 V/ns ultra high slew rate (dV/dt) PWM waveform. The designed impulse generator only requires 5 V voltage input as well as two fiber optical signals, while no extra bucky high power voltage source is required. Thus, the volume of impulse generator is only 10 in3. By adjusting input signals, the pulse width and frequency of the bipolar PWM-type impulses can be accuratly controled. In this paper, detailed anlysis of the circuit operation modes is provided, as well as the method to adjust and optimize output waveform voltage dV/dt.
