An automatic constant false alarm rate (CFAR) ship detection method using single-channel range-compressed airborne radar data is proposed in this paper. Potential targets and high clutter peaks are first pre-detected and cancelled to obtain clean training data for fitting clutter distribution models and computing CFAR detection thresholds. The suitability and applicability of the clutter model is determined by comparing the set false alarm rate with the estimated false alarm rate from the data.
