Effect of nitrogen and carbon dioxide on methane-air explosion
Methane-air explosion; Inert; Pressure; Elementary reaction; Reaction rate
Draft Accepted
Methane-air mixture explosions are very serious in China’s coal mine. Inert gases such as N2 and CO2 are one of the most effective measures for explosion suppression. A standard 20L spherical vessel was used to measure the inert effect of N2 and CO2 on methane-air explosion. Safety related parameters (peak pressure, maximum rate of pressure rise and time to peak pressure) are monitored and compared of different amount of inert gas. The results show that peak pressure and maximum rate of pressure rise decrease with the increase amount of inert gas, and CO2 is more efficient for explosion suppression than N2. Elementary reaction rates of different amount of inert gas were simulated and compared. The result shows that elementary reaction OH+CO=CO2+H rate decrease rapidly with the increase amount of CO2.The research results can be used as a reference for the inerting treatment design of methane explosion protection in coal mine.
