Research Status Analysis for Physical Model Tests of Tailings Dam

To enhance the scientific nature and the reliability of physical model tests of tailings dam, adopting the methods of document literature collection and analysis, the present developments and main achievements are discussed from the four aspects that are mechanism tests of dam break, characteristics tests of downstream evolution, stability evaluation and protection tests. The experiment materials, measuring methods and instruments adopted by the model are summarized. The problems and shortcomings of physical model test are analyzed from the difference between physical model test and prototype, content of experiment, measurement methods, etc. Suggestions on the physical simulation test of tailings dam are as follow: (1).Strengthen the collection of historical data and on-site monitoring data, and study the scope of test error. (2).Outdoor large scale tests and multiple sets of indoor small scale tests should be carried on, in addition, centrifugal model tests and large-scale hydraulic model tests are suggested to made. (3).Do research on dam break mechanism under various disaster factors from macro and micro perspective, strengthen the study on safety evaluation of tailings reservoir and the scope of disaster, and carry out environmental impact test and research. (4).Combine with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and 3D printing to improve and develop monitoring technology and test methods.
