Research on methane adsorption and desorption capacity of coal treated with different esterification reagents

A new way of gas control in coal mines is using chemical reagents to control coal seam gas outburst. The effects of methane adsorption and desorption from coal with different esterification agents were studied by isothermal adsorption and isothermal desorption experiments. The coal sample in the experiment came from Yangquan No.2 mine, Coal samples were treated by two different esterification agents, CHOOCH3 and CH3COOC2H5. The result showed as follow: The isothermal adsorption curves and isothermal desorption curves of the three coal samples basically coincide, and the trend of methane adsorption and desorption under equilibrium pressure is similar with standard Langmuir curve, the experimental data conforms to the Langmuir equation; The adsorption capacity of methane was reduced by coal samples treated with esterification reagents, the adsorption Langmuir volume of CHOOCH3-coal sample was lower than that of original coal sample and the Langmuir volume was reduced by 39.82%, the adsorption Langmuir volume of CH3COOC2H5-coal sample was lower than that of original coal sample and the Langmuir volume was reduced by 46.95%; The desorption capacity of methane was also reduced by coal samples treated with esterification reagents, the desorption Langmuir volume of CHOOCH3-coal sample was lower than that of original coal sample and the Langmuir volume was reduced by 37.60%, the desorption of methane was reduced by coal samples treated with esterification reagents, the desorption Langmuir volume of CH3COOC2H5-coal sample was lower than that of original coal sample and the Langmuir volume was reduced by 46.89%. The results could provide a theoretical guidance for using chemical reagents to increase gas extraction rate.
