Case Studies of Rock Bursts in Tectonic Areas with Facies Change

Although tectonic areas with facies change, i.e. variations of coal seam thickness, coal seam dip angle and coal quality, are one of the three major geological structures causing tectonic rock bursts, case studies of rock bursts about these kinds of tectonic structures and the related mechanisms are rare. Thus, the main object of this paper is trying to illustrate this issue and provide some case histories for further researches. Based on several typical rock bursts occurring in tectonic areas with facie change, the temporal and spatial characteristics were described in detail and the geological characteristics were investigated carefully. Then, the occurrence mechanisms of these rock bursts were discussed, and some advices for mitigating rock bursts in tectonic areas with faces change were given. This study not only provides an essential reference for understanding the mechanisms of rock bursts occurring in tectonic areas with facies change, but also provides a basis for selecting mitigation strategies.
