A Wide Tuning Range Push-push Ka-band VCO Using 55nm CMOS

A wide tuning range push-push voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) is implemented in a Ka-band frequency synthesizer for mm-wave communication. The proposed LC-VCO is realized employing a switched capacitor array in a 55nm CMOS technology with 1.2V supply voltage. The results of simulation reveal that the fundamental output of the VCO can vary from 13.54GHz to 19.96GHz, while a push-push structure doubled the output frequency toward 27.08GHz to 39.92GHz, corresponding to a frequency tuning range (FTR) of 38.32 %. At 1MHz offset, phase noise is −112.50dBc/Hz and −105.32dBc/Hz at 28GHz and 39GHz respectively, with a 5.01mW dissipation power.
