Harvesting of Isochrysis.zhanjiangensis for biofuels using ultrafiltration membranes
Abstract Accepted
Algal biomass has been recognized as a promising alternative source of raw material for biofuel production and is also an important source of many high value-added natural products and bioactive compounds, but the lack of an economical and efficient method to harvest algal biomass is a major problem. Especially Isochrysis. zhanjiangensis has no cell wall, so it is much difficult to harvest by conventional harvesting method. The objective of this paper is to develop efficient technologies for harvesting of algal biomass using membrane filtration. Four Hermia membrane blocking models were adopted to quantify and evaluate the membrane fouling of algal and algogenic organic matter(AOM), the experiments were conducted with various operational condition, including different cross-flow speed of algal, TMP of AOM. Both operations were investigated to compare the membrane performance and membrane fouling in microalgal harvesting process by scanning electron microscope (SEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Good agreement between cake formation model and experimental data was found, confirming the validity of the Hermia models for assessing the membrane fouling of algal and that cake layer deposits on membrane. The results showed that when the cross-flow speed of algal is 0.48 m/s, the average flux is 71.32 L/m2·h, increased by 34.6%, and the flux increase predicted by the model under different conditions was consistent with the experimental results.
