The family Cruciferae is characterized by high stability of flower structure. However,
species with deviations from standard floral formula are known in some genera. For
example, in many Lepidium species the number of petals or/and stamens is reduced.
Also, the reduction in the number of petals is known in the genera Brassica,
Cardamine and Rorippa. The stable occurrence of apetalous forms suggest that they
have several evolutionary advantages (“hopeful monsters”) and are thus of particular
scientific interest. Capsella bursa-pastoris is a recent allotetraploid and a promising
model for the study of evolution of floral development. In particular, in C. bursa-
pastoris there are two naturally occurring varieties characterized by the loss of petals.
In our study we investigate the morphotype with the corolla disappearance, which is
widespread in natural conditions in the European population. The aim of the study is
the localization of the regions associated with petal reduction. To achieve this, we
have analyzed petal number in F2 progeny from cross of the morphs with petals and
without petals and performed mapping by sequencing and comparison of pools of two
extreme phenotypic classes from F2. We have found that this trait is controlled by two
loci at non-homeologous regions of the same chromosome. Further, the mutations in
the detected loci have different mode of the inheritance.
