Ramp wave compression experiments of single crystal tantalum are conducted on CQ-4 device to explore its mechanical property at high pressure, and Photonic Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) was used to measure the free surface velocity of different thickness samples. Distinct elastic-plastic transitions are observed on velocity profiles, and the peak elastic velocities are almost constant within the thickness of 1.0mm~1.8mm for certain orientations. The measured ramp elastic limit of [001], [011] and [111] orientations of single crystal tantalum are 84±2 m/s, 74±2 m/s, 94±3 m/s respectively for free surface situation. A characteristic method was used to explore the sound speed of single crystal tantalum under ramp compression. The results show that elastic sound speeds of [001], [011] and [111] single crystal tantalum are 4.2km/s, 4.2km/s, 4.4km/s respectively. After elastic-plastic transition, the plastic sound speed shows linear relation with particle velocity.
