In recent years, an induction voltage adder (IVA) has been built in our laboratory which is able to produce a maximum voltage about 4.2 MV on the rod-pinch diode. It is composed of six stages. Each stage is identical and composed of a Tesla transformer, intermediate storage capacitor, laser triggered gas switch (LTGS), pulse forming line, self-breaking oil switch, water transmission line, and one induction cavity. As there exists the possibility of LTGS pre-fire and no-fire, anomalous voltage will be produced across the induction cell. The switch jitters of the LTGS and self-breaking oil switch result in that each induction cavity could not be driven at the time when the electromagnetic wave transmitting from upstream arrives at this cell. It will also affect the operating voltage of the induction cavity. The experiment results show that the operating voltage of the induction cavity will increase from 1.1 MV to 1.8 MV if one LTGS closes very earlier than others. A reversed voltage pulse of maximum about 700.0 kV will be produced on the induction cell when one LTGS closes very later than others or does not close. The output voltage pulse of the IVA is not strongly influenced by the switches jitter. However, the operating voltages of the six cells are significantly altered by the driving-timing sequence of the induction cavity. These fault modes are also analyzed with a full circuit model denoting each element in the IVA.
