Optimization of x-ray emission from Gd-Au-Gd planar sample by laser irradiation

In indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion(ICF), the M-band(2~5keV) x-rays which are of long mean free path can transmit further, these x-rays can reach the fuel and preheat it before the arrival of the shock wave. In our study, peak of Gd M-band is at about 1.5keV. In addition, the opacity of Au is lower than for Gd when the radiation temperature falls into a low temperature region. Therefore we proposed a Gd-Au-Gd sandwich hohlraum design in this work. Study of the radiation flux shows that the M-band fraction is rather low at the beginning and the peak radiation flux of the Gd-Au-Gd planar sample is higher than that of pure Au. The x-ray flux was used to irradiate a 1D spherical target. And the neutron yield was increased by about 50% when using that of the Gd-Au-Gd planar sample. This result gives confidence to us for the hohlraum design in the future.
