Diamond anvil cell (DAC) is a major equipment to study materials under high static pressure in the laboratory, and it holds the record of the highest static pressure generated in the world. Here by applying the synchrotron x-ray diffraction and absorption spectroscopy technique, we have studied the loading behavior of DAC up to 4 Mbar, which is believed to be the maximum pressure of a conventional DAC. A double cupping of the beveled anvils has been revealed by using the sub-micron x-ray probe, other information of the DAC up to 4 Mbar have been investigated, such as the pressure gradient and distribution, gasket thickness changes and distribution, the deformation of diamond anvils etc. In addition, two newly developed techniques to break the pressure barrier of conventional DAC are also discussed.
