High pressure processing is emerging as one significant tool to make efficient preparation of advanced materials with novel structures and transformative properties via modifying the atomic and electronic structures. In this talk, I will introduce the recent progress on successful synthesis and characterization of novel materials, which are hard to be prepared at ambient pressure, using high pressure and high temperature means, such as hard transition metal borides VB2, ReB2, MoB2, MoB, CrB, TaB2, transition metal phosphides Ir2P, CdP4, Ni2P, NiP2, ZnP4, Cd7P10, PtP2, layered transition metal sulfides ReS2, and superhard diamond-cBN alloy using the direct elements reactions or via ion-exchange reactions in a large volume press. Moreover, we have also investigated the evolution of crystal structures, microstructures, elastic, magnetic, electronic transitions, metallization, visible-light responsiveness, mechanical properties and thermal stability of these materials synthesized at high pressure combining with synchrotron in situ high pressure x-ray diffraction technology in diamond anvil cell (DAC), Vickers hardness testing, scanning electron microscopy, TG/DSC, HRTEM, first-principle calculation.
