Bridge bearings are essential elements for guaranteeing the acceptable structural performance of bridges. The sliding performance of bearings, which is presented by sliding friction forces, influences the dynamic properties, internal forces, and safety of bridges. For engineers immediately maintaining and correctly analyzing the bridge structure, it is important to monitor and alarm the change in sliding performance of the bridge bearing. This paper proposes a sliding performance alarming approach for bridge sliding bearings using monitoring temperature and displacement data. A temperature-displacement hysteresis model is proposed considering bearing friction. Then, a sliding performance indicator is proposed according to the temperature-displacement hysteresis model, and the alarming approach for sliding performance deterioration is established using the sliding performance indicator with statistical process control. Finally, an engineering application of the alarming approach is carried out on a cable-stayed bridge. The results indicate that the proposed temperature-displacement hysteresis model can straightforwardly reflect the sliding friction of the bearings and that the proposed sliding performance alarming approach is practicable for sliding bearings.
