A Novel Phasor Domain Parameter-Free Fault Location Algorithm on Untransposed Transmission Lines

This paper proposes a parameter-free method to locate faults in untransposed transmission lines with asymmetrical tower structures. Best implementation requires synchrophasor voltage and current measurements at both terminals of the line. First, the physical laws that the transmission line should obey before and during faults are described in phasor domain, where the fault location as well as parameters of the line are introduced as an unknown variables. Afterwards, the fault location can be directly solved without knowing exact values of transmission line parameters. Compared to the state-of-the-art parameter-free untransposed line fault location method, this method considers a more general asymmetrical tower structure. Numerical experiments prove that the proposed algorithm is more accurate compared to existing untransposed line fault location method, independent of fault location, types and impedances.
