Contribution of Doubly Fed Induction Generators to System Frequency Regulation

With the increasing penetration of wind power generation into electrical power systems, the lack of system inertia has become a particular concern as the power-electronics interfaces will decouple the wind turbine generators from the power grid. In order to operate the wind turbine generators to participate in the frequency regulation, this paper proposes a coordinated control scheme which is realized by adjusting the pitch angle and rotor dc-link voltage reference of doubly fed wind turbine (DFIG). In the proposed scheme, the dc-link voltage adjustment can accelerate the frequency response while the pitch angle adjustment can increase the reserve capacity of the frequency adjustment and decreased the required size of the dc-link capacitors. The proposed control scheme has been demonstrated through a power system model simulated in MATLAB/Simulink environment and its performance is evaluated for grid disturbances of faults and load changes.
