Requirements and Methods for Reducing Fault Clearing Times in Smart Grids

The high level of penetration of distributed energy resources (DER) imposes specific requirements for the protection of transmission and distribution systems to support their ride-through capability during short circuit faults. The paper describes the requirements for the fault clearing times according to the ride-through characteristics and later describes advanced transmission and distribution protection schemes based on IEC 61850 communications that significantly reduce the fault clearing times compared to conventional protection schemes.
