Research on the Optimization of Backup Substation Area Protection for Smart Substation

Taking advantage of the information sharing of the whole station of smart substation, a hierarchical secondary system architecture consisting of local equipment and substation equipment is proposed. In the system architecture, the substation area protection through effective and blocking state of the dual local protection for station control layer GOOSE monitoring line, when the dual local protection are lost, the short distance backup distance protection of the substation area protection enable to achieve accelerated remove the failure. By calculating the measurement impedance of each cubicle for substation area, after the fault is fast cleared by the contralateral protection, the fault line is judged by different characteristics for the measure impedance of the fault line and the non-fault line, which could be cleared successively by substation area protection. After RTDS simulation, the optimized action time for backup distance protection in substation area is less than 190ms, and the successive action time for substation area protection is less than 150ms.
