Remote Testing of Protection Devices and Schemes in IEC 61850 Based Digital Substations

Remote Testing

The transition of the electric power industry towards the Smart Grid requires improvements in the reliability, security and efficiency of the electric power system. All of this is significantly affected by maintenance testing. The paper describes an innovative approach based on the testing related features defined in the IEC 61850 standard. Virtual isolation of protection functions and schemes, combined with remote access to the test system in a digital substation allows the testing to be performed from the convenience of the office environment, eliminating the need for travel to a substation by the testing team.
