Numerical analysis of crack propagation by using the p-version finite element method and the contour integral method

In this paper, the stress intensity factors (SIFs) are extracted by applying the p-version finite element method and the contour integral method. Crack propagation paths are analyzed in details. Two numerical models, a plate with an edge crack loaded in shear and fractures in a concrete gravity dam, are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Numerical results show higher accuracy and better stability compared with those results obtained by the extended finite element method in literature available and commercial finite element software package ABAQUS.
