Thrips, a tiny flying insect, possesses wings which are comprised of a paddle-like membrane and long fringe bristles, which play an important role in flight aerodynamics. In order to elucidate the micromechanics of the fringe bristles, focused ion beam (FIB) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are employed to investigate the morphology of the bristle. It indicates that the bristle exhibits a tubular structure and the ratio of inner to outer diameter varies from the base to the tip. In addition, the Young’s modulus of the bristles is measured to be as large as 12.7 GPa
