Longwall mining in Bogdanka Coal Mine is connected with particularly adverse mining conditions. Low UCS (uniaxial compressive strength) values of the rock mass, existence of coal layers in the vicinity of the floor or roof of the roadway and depths reaching 1000 meters often manifest themselves in way of large deformations of the roadways. In order to minimize such problems, geomechanical model of Bogdanka Coal Mine was prepared in FLAC3D. First part of the article presents utilization of large three dimensional numerical models to evaluate stress changes induced by different variants of mine plans. Second part presents use of novel, calibrated numerical model of yieldable steel sets (ŁPSC 12/S) in roadway stability analysis, where large deformations were observed. The results of numerical modeling were compared against borehole camera survey and laser scanning conducted in the analyzed area. Ways of countermeasures to aforementioned problems were also presented.
