Given the complexity and uniqueness of underground hard rock mines, the application of the design fire scenario approach is recommended when evaluating the fire safety in mines. Providing a full set of design fire scenarios – ensuring that several important life safety aspects are covered - for a mine can be challenging. To facilitate this work, this paper presents several proposed design fire scenarios which could be used as a support. The proposed scenarios account for influencing parameters such as failure of existing fire protection systems, variations in the ventilation flow, variations in the personnel density and fire characteristics. The proposed design fire scenarios will provide a key tool when evaluating fire protection measures in an underground mine.
