Gas is an associated gas in the process of coal mining, and its greenhouse effect is 21 times that of carbon dioxide. China’s coal mine gas utilization rate is low, and the utilization rate of underground gas extraction in China is only 44.8% in 2020. To achieve the goal of carbon neutrality, it is necessary to further promote the comprehensive utilization of coal mine gas. This paper analyzes the emission and utilization of coal gas in China, and points out that the carbon emission of coal gas can be divided into natural emission and man-made emission. In addition, abandoned mines are also the main path of gas emission. The trend of coal production and consumption in China is summarized, and the results show that the change trend of coal gas carbon emission is closely related to coal output. The carbon neutral path of coal gas is proposed from two aspects of technology and policy. In terms of technology, the existing technology of coal mine gas utilization is summarized, and a new method of mixing and utilization of extremely low-concentration gas and Ventilation air methane is proposed. New technology of gas resource utilization is developed, and integration of gas power generation and utilization is explored to improve the utilization rate of coal mine gas. Increase the research and application of CCUS technology, and use abandoned mines and existing technologies to capture and store carbon dioxide escaping from coal mine gas. Expand the area of afforestation in mining area and increase the application of ecological carbon sequestration method. In terms of policy, the existing carbon neutrality policy in China is analyzed, and the stepped subsidy of coal mine gas utilization is proposed to encourage coal mine enterprises to increase the utilization of gas, thus improve the relevant policy and institutional environment of carbon emission reduction of coal mine gas. Establish carbon emission trading venues, set carbon taxes and introduce carbon pricing, so as to raise carbon prices and achieve carbon neutrality in coal mine gas by 2050 in advance.
