The co-prime array has been widely studied for its low redundancy and high DOA estimation accuracy. However, the DOA estimation performance will be degraded due to the existence of non-uniform noise. Aiming at this problem, this paper modifies the basic co-prime array to the symmetric co-prime array and proposes a novel algorithm to estimate the DOA without the interference of non-uniform noise. The proposed algorithm makes use of the characteristic that the noise received by different sub-arrays is independent to construct the cross-covariance matrix of the received signal, so that the non-uniform noise will not be involved in the cross-covariance matrix. While many algorithms are designed to eliminate the received noise, the proposed algorithm avoids introducing the non-uniform noise into the covariance matrix. Then the spatial smoothing is used to recover the full rank covariance matrix. Simulations results prove that the proposed algorithm has better DOA estimation performance than other algorithms.
