Abstract
To improve the ablation resistance of carbon fabric reinforced phenolic composite, TaSi2/ZrSi2 particles with different molar ratios were adopted to modify the phenolic resin. The ablation behavior and mechanism of modified composites were investigated. Results showed that TaSi2/ZrSi2 particles were dispersed uniformly in the phenolic resin. The ablation resistance of modified composites was effectively enhanced. When the molar ration of TaSi2 and ZrSi2 was 1:2, the modified composites had optimal ablation resistance. The mass ablation rate of modified composites decreased by 41% compared to that of the unmodified composite. Obvious ceramic accumulations were formed on the surface of modified composites. As the content of Zr element increased, the amount of TaZr2.75O8 and ZrO2 in the ceramics increased, which provided good heat insulation layer for the inner material. The volatilization of melting Ta2O5 and the effluence of pyrolysis gas effectively dissipated the heat energy and left passages in the ceramic layer. All these suggest that the modified composites have potential to be used in serious thermal ablation environments.
