Cable joint is the concentrated part of faults in cable lines. The anomaly temperature distribution caused by contact resistance and structure defects is one of the primary causes. With complex structures, poor installation and defects can lead to abrupt changes in temperature distribution, which will accelerate insulation aging and reduce insulating performance. Nowadays, the influence of cable joint installation on temperature field is not thoroughly studied, standards and theories for guidance are relatively scarce, which poses great challenges to the installation of cable joint. In this paper, finite element simulation was used to simulate the temperature field of cable joints in distribution network, effects and mechanism of crimping ratio, butting ratio and gap defects on temperature field are studied. Conclusion is obtained that high crimping ratio and butting ratio should be guaranteed and air gap defects should be prevented during the installation of cable joint, providing reference and guidance for the installation of cable joint.
