In the field of magnetically coupled resonant-wireless power transfer (MCR-WPT), relay coils are utilized to significantly enhance power transfer efficiency, especially over long transfer distance. Due to complex impacts of coil positions and the load resistance on efficiency, this work proposes a method to optimize the WPT system parameters using Genetic Algorithm so that higher efficiency and lateral misalignment tolerance of the receiver coil can be realized. Firstly, the circuit model is analyzed along with the derivation of efficiency for the 3-coil system. Based on genetic algorithm, by optimizing transfer distance between the transmitter coil and the relay coil, lateral misalignment of the receiver coil and the load resistance, transfer efficiency achieves 92.84% when the receiver coil is located at the maximum misalignment position. Simulation results are in good agreement with algorithm solution, verifying accuracy of the proposed optimization method. Moreover, if any of the optimized parameters is changed, transfer efficiency will deteriorate subsequently, thus illustrating feasibility of the optimization method.
