In this paper, a novel semi-active variable inertance device (SVID) based on electromagnetic dampers is proposed, which can be applied on the high-speed craft seat to reduce the occupants' injury due to violent vibration. The novel device is consisting of a linear controllable mechanical motion rectifier (CMMR) and a flywheel. The CMMR has a ball screw, two controllable electromagnetic devices, and three bevel gears; it can transfer rotation and torque to the central bevel gear that mounted the flywheel. At the same time, because of the linearity of the controllable electromagnetic devices, the whole device has better controllability compared with the traditional magnetorheological system. The moment of inertia of the flywheel can be controlled in real time to suppress vibration. The device is analyzed in the frequency and time domains. Besides, the new device is applied on a seat suspension of the high-speed craft. Compared with the passive system, the novel device has significantly improved the seat performance of vibration suppression. It is expected that this device will get significant development in the future.
