Sound insulation performance of partitions is one of the key comfort requirements in hotel interior spaces. In this paper, the design of a composite partition structure for lightweight but with high sound insulation is presented and discussed for hotel partition applications on the basis of the constrained layer damping (CLD) theory. The structure is composed of different thickness density boards, an ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber board, a rock wool board, and a sponge rubber board. The normal incidence sound transmission loss (NISTL) through partitions under this design is evaluated through numerical simulations with the finite element method as well as experimental measurements in a standing wave tube. Good agreement is shown between the numerical and experimental results. It is shown that partitions with the proposed design have area densities below 42kg/m2 but have NISTL over 51.8 dB at 200 Hz and 1000 Hz in the 1/3 octave bands. There is good application potential of the proposed lightweight partition design for high sound insulation requirements in hotel interior spaces.
