Abstract
CH4, an important greenhouse gas, has about 28 times the global warming potential of CO2 over a 100‐year scale. Wetlands are important terrestrial ecosystems for land‐atmosphere CH4 exchange. A new process‐based model is developed to quantify CH4 emissions from natural wetlands. The new model is an attempt to incorporate main microbial mechanisms and transport processes in wetland CH4 cycling, and the modeled results matched the observed CH4 emissions well at evaluation sites globally. Under current and future climate change conditions, more accurate simulation and prediction of wetland CH4 emissions are particularly needed for regional and global CH4 budget estimation.
