Abstract
By performing two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, the magnetic reconnection at the terrestrial bow shock is investigated. We obtain key findings concerning wave excitations, formation of current sheets, and magnetic reconnection processes at the shock transition: (1) electron-only reconnections are observed in the immediate downstream of quasi-perpendicular shocks. (2) At quasi-parallel shocks, ULF waves play important roles in the shock front nonstationarity (rippling and self-reformation) and reconnection processes. (3) MMS direct observations of reconnection at a quasi-parallel shock will also be discussed. Results shed new insight on mechanisms for particle acceleration and energy dissipation at the terrestrial bow shock.
