Abstract
The ideal spatial, spectral, and radiometric characteristics of Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) make this sensor attractive for monitoring coastal and inland water quality. Reliable atmospheric correction is essential to support retrieval of optically active substance concentration (e.g., chlorophyll a, phycocyanin, suspended matter, and colored dissolved organic matter) from remote sensing reflectance (Rrs(λ)). This study evaluated four OLCI atmospheric correction methods (including MUMM, Acolite, Polymer, and C2RCC) using in situ reflectance in 13 inland waters. The results indicate that Acolite had the best performance compared with the other three atmospheric correction methods, especially for blue and green bands. MUMM, Polymer and C2RCC are three atmospheric correction methods based on their specific water reflectance models. The uncertainties of the specific water reflectance models lead to these atmospheric correction methods cannot get reliable atmospheric correction results. Acolite had the potential to use as an atmospheric correction method to produce regional or national turbid inland waters Rrs(λ) products.
