In order to clarify the ecotoxicity of biochars derived from six different types of biomass wastes (including bamboo biochar, wood biochar, twig biochar, leaf biochar, straw biochar, and pelletized straw biochar) were mixed with quartz sand at mass ratio of 2%(biochar) to 98%(sand), respectively, to cultivate radish, mung bean, and rice. The results indicated that all the 6 kinds of biochars increased the germination energy of these three crops. However, the application of biochars showed no significant effects on the germination rate. Although the influence of biochars on root and seeding growth were changed with types of biochar, all the biochars showed positive effect on the biomass of crops. Compared with the control group, the application of biochars had inhibitory effects on the enzyme activity and cell damage of the three crops, showing biological toxicity. The application of biochars decreased the SOD and POD enzyme activities of mung bean, with the reduction of degree of cell damage (MDA content). However, the SOD and CAT enzyme activities of radish increased with a raise of POD and MDA content. The difference between mung bean and radish indicated that mung beans can tolerate the toxicity of the above six kinds of biochars, but radishes cannot.
