In the process of simultaneous photo-fermentation of corn stalks for hydrogen production, foam generation has a significant impact on the fermentation system. In this study, different concentrations of polyalkyleneglycols were added to the fermentation broth to improve and control the fermentation broth foam generation. The effect of adding polyalkyleneglycols on the hydrogen production capacity was analyzed in terms of cumulative hydrogen production, hydrogen production rate and physicochemical properties of fermentation broth. The results showed that the addition of defoamer to the fermentation system has a positive effect on the hydrogen production process and could improve the cumulative hydrogen production. A 24.7% improvement in hydrogen production was obtained at the defoamer concentration of 125 ppm relative to the blank control group with a cumulative hydrogen production of 72 mLŸg-1 stalks.
