Power Quality is a crucial aspect of power systems as the technologies of electrical systems and loads became advanced and harder to control and manage. The increase of non-linear loads, Distributed Generation resources (DG), and Power Electronic devices disrupt the current and voltage signals that minimize their capacity and potentials such as harmonics, voltage sags, unbalanced phases, and frequency variations. These issues must be controlled and diminished to increase the efficiency of the microgrid system. The use of multifunctioning components such as rectifiers and inverters to perform hybrid control of the current-voltage is a reliable and effective solution. The multifunctioning components are supposed to perform their default purpose which is converting the AC signal to DC or vies-versa to perform the hybrid controlling scheme. This scheme should improve the power quality of the system by minimizing the harmonics and making the current and voltage signal pure sinusoidal. Moreover, adding a hybrid storage system consisting of batteries and supercapacitors will increase the system’s reliability and make the design more flexible to load demand changes. Implement these proposed techniques minimized the total harmonics distortion (TDH) of the current at the non-linear load side from 150% to only 10%, and the Voltage THD at the same load decreased from 4.5% to 0.25%. The storage system capacity increased to be almost fifteen times than it was before adding the hybrid storage system. A 15-Bus Microgrid model on the simulation software MATLAB/Simulink was used to simulate and implement the proposed system.
