To increase the dielectric strength of insulators and reduce the breakdown probability, the model of a laminated basin insulator with functional gradient dielectric materials was established based on the finite element analysis method. Simulation results show that layering the basin insulator and configuring each layer with appropriate dielectric constant can effectively reduce the maximum field strength along the surface. As the number of layering increase, the area of the region with high field strength near the electrode gradually decreases, so that the electric field is improved more effectively. When the number of layering is 6, the maximum field strength reduction along the concave and convex sides of the insulator is 25.12% and 25.22%, respectively. Besides, the maximum field strength after layering always appears at the intersection, so the intersection can be sub-divided to further improve the electric field.
