Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) is the key component of converter valve used in flexible High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission system. The power loss calculation of the IGBT is essential to design the cooling system and to estimate the system reliability in practical engineering. In this paper, an effective calculation method for the power loss of IGBT is proposed by solving an inverse heat transfer problem, where the finite element method is used to solve the heat transfer processes in the IGBT module and water-cooled plate. The calculation results show that a small power loss error (<2%) can be guaranteed with a reasonable temperature measurement error (<±0.1 ℃), demonstrating a high prediction precision of this method. Considering that the practical implementation based on this calculation method is quite simple, this method is promising to be very useful for engineering applications.
