Study on flexibility improvement of power system dominated by renewable energy

Integrating large scale renewable energy into the grid brings variability and uncertainty. New technical solutions are needed to address this conjunction of difficulties. The new solutions will include new technologies, methods and practices, applied in order to provide more flexibility and make the power systems reliable and maintain security of supply. Firstly, the need for power system flexibility improvement was described. Then, the state of the art of the technologies and practices related to improvements of power system flexibility for integrating high share renewable energy is analyzed. This analysis is further divided into the grid-friendly renewable energy generation, improved flexibility in conventional generation, transmission expansion, operation enhancement and demand response. At last, the technical solution recommendations for integrating high share renewable energy by the improvement of power system flexibility are proposed.
