In order to enhance the insulation performance of insulating stick under the condition of short-time rainfall and high humidity. The flashover characteristics of insulating stick with hydrophobic coatings under artificial rain was investigated. The hydrophobicity, leakage current and surface discharge voltage of three kinds of insulating sticks samples were tested and analyzed. And combined with image recognition technology to analyze the morphological distribution of water droplets on different surfaces. The test results show that the hydrophobicity of insulating sticks coated with hydrophobic coating increased under dry condition, the dry flashover voltage of the three different insulator cover samples has little difference and the difference is less than 5%; under rain condition, the wet flashover voltage of P-El88 coating were more than 75% higher than that of the uncoated sample, and The leakage current is about 1/9 of that of the uncoated sample. The analysis of image recognition technology shows that the duty cycle and particle size of water droplets on the hydrophobic coating surface are smaller than those on the uncoated. The duty ratio and particle size of water droplets on hydrophobic coating surface are smaller than those on uncoated.
