Abstract
Pumped storage is a mature and grid-scaled energy storage technology that can effectively promote variable renewable energy (VRE) accommodation into grid. This paper establishes a quantification method of promoting VRE accommodation by pumped storage power plant (PSPP) during pumping period and peak load period, based on the functions of energy storage, peak shifting and operation reserve. Taking the PSPP of Yixing in Jiangsu Province as an example, the VRE accommodation promoted by PSPP is quantified with typical daily operation data to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
