Abstract
The lightning protection performance of the transmission lines will be very important for the safe operation of HVDC transmission lines. The lightning day in the Philippines is 90 days, and the terrain is mainly mountainous. The lightning protection measures adopted for a ± 350kv line built 20 years ago are not effective. Therefore, the lightning protection research of this line should be paid great attention. Based on the parameters of VMIP (Visayas Mindanao Interconnection Project), considering the lightning flashover rate of ±350kV transmission line built 20 years ago and relative standards to control lightning flashover rate, we will carry out simulation and achieve such goals as follows: Compute the lightning flashover rate of VMIP,determine the proper shielding angle and determine the proper length of the insulator. The results obtained in this paper has been used in the engineering design.
