Abstract
Developing urban rail transit to alleviate traffic pollution has become the main measure for building low-carbon transportation systems in many major cities in China. Urban rail transit has less per capita energy consumption, but more resources consumption during the construction. This paper proposes a carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions prediction model for the metro station construction based on the engineering statistics on metro stations construction involving human activities, material consumption and construction machinery use. Then Xi'an Metro Line 4 was taken as an example based on above model to calculate the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from different sources during the station construction. Results show the following: (1) The carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of materials consumption account for more than 90%; (2) The CO2 emissions of different types of stations are significantly different; (3) The total floor areas of the station and the lengths of the entrance are the two main factors affecting emissions, and the total floor areas have the greatest sensitivity to the CO2 emissions of the metro stations construction. Strategies, like Using the underground space, optimizing design and construction organization can significantly reduce CO2 emissions for metro station construction.
