Abstract
The entrance and exit(E&E) of a tunnel are typical crash prone segments. Thus, this paper is focused on exploring the influence range of the traffic risk at the tunnel E&E. Furthermore, the accident spatial distribution characteristics of the E&E are also studied to discover the accident mechanism. Driving risk characteristics of the E&E segments have been studied by analyzing the traffic speed/visual adaptability and accident distribution statistics in the paper. The study was carried out on the 2552 traffic accidents of 41 tunnels of different lengths in Guangdong Province. Segments 200m before and after the E&E were found the influence range of the traffic risk at the tunnel E&E. Furthermore, cubic polynomial curve was found suitable to describe the spatial distribution law of the traffic risk at tunnel E&E. The research results can provide a basis for the safety optimization design and safety management of tunnel openings.
