The Impact of Dockless Bike-sharing on Public Transit, a Case Study of Shanghai China

Abstract
The boom of dockless bike-sharing (DlBS) systems in China has restored bicycling and changed people’s daily travel modes, mostly by impacting walking and public transit systems. The impacts of DlBS on public transit could be either substitution or connection. However, how DlBS substitute or connect to public transit in practice and to what extent, these are still unanswered questions. In this paper we initiated a case study based on survey data in Shanghai, and found five main ridership changes after the emergence of DlBS. It was observed that 29% of respondents using DlBS to connect public transit instead of walking, which results a 28% of walking time decrease averagely (7.56 minutes). About 12% respondents using DlBS as a substitution of bus, which results no travel time increase on average. In order to further understand whether and how DlBS impacts public transit ridership, we sorting the dependent variable into three situations: increase / decrease / unchanging the public transit ridership. By using nested logit model, we conclude the following conclusions. (1) Distance to transit stops has a positive association with using DlBS to connect public transit. (2) Residents are more inclined to use DlBS to connect metro compared with connecting bus as travel distance increases. (3) Respondents are more likely to use DlBS to connect public transit in commuting trips than that in non-commuting ones. The findings also highlight that DlBS is effective to solving the first-last mile accessibility of metro.
