Car sharing is a new type of travel mode under the concept of sharing economy and is in the initial stage of development in China. Both car sharing and taxi have the attributes of public transportation and private transportation, but there are differences in business models, service processes, and pricing. This paper compares the travel characteristics of car sharing and taxi from three aspects: travel time, distance and spatial distribution, based on taxi GPS data and EVCARD, China's largest car sharing service provider, order data. The results reveal that there is a certain complementarity between car sharing and taxi travel. Car sharing travel has morning and evening peak characteristics, but is less relevant to commuting. Car sharing is mainly used for medium and long distance and suburban related travel. It is suggested that car sharing can be used as a supplement to long-distance and cross-regional public transportation in the suburbs, improving the service level of long-distance suburban travel.
